YOUTH SESSIONS (Ages 8 to 17) - $165 per session
We recommend taking more than 1 session! 3 week sessions. Beginners and Mates meet 2 times per week.

Beginner - An introductory
class for the first time sailor. Children typically start in an Opti Dinghy. The older,
larger children start in the 420's. Basic sailing classes will be taught in the classroom
and on the water, including: Straight Line Course, Stopping and Starting,
Tacking/Jibing, Basic Sail Trim, Upwind Sailing, Downwind Sailing, Basic
Knots, Docking, Towing.
Opti Racing - Requires successful completion of
the Beginner class. Younger children will start to learn basic racing skills in the Opti dinghy.
Racing is held on Fridays. See the "Registration Form" link on the left for
sessions and cost.
Mate - Successful completion of the beginner class. Many
children move to the 420's, but some may also use the Opti dinghy. Classes
will be taught in the classroom and on the water, and includes: Straight
Line Course, Stopping and Starting, Tacking/Jibing, Sail Trim (Including Jib
Trim for 420's), Upwind Sailing, Downwind Sailing, More Advanced Knots,
Capsizing, Right Of Way, Trapeze (for 420's).
420 Racing - Successful completion of the mate (advanced)
class. Enrollment is at the director's discretion based on the student's
prior experience and ability. Training will include: Various types of race
courses, Starting Sequence, Advanced Boat Handling, Wind Shifts, Racing
Tactics, Advanced Sail Trim (Including Spinnaker Trim), Racing Rules.

The program is based on the US Sailing training system. Students
will always wear life jackets. Instructors, either in the student's boat or on a safety boat, accompany the students.
All instructors are experienced sailors, many having learned to sail in the SJJF Summer Sailing Program.
Our director, Casey Ray, was a member of the Michigan State University sailing team.
